Dr. Essam Sharaf

Arab Spring: its path, its effects and how the West should react

Dr. Essam Sharaf led a group of academics from Cairo University on February 4, 2011 demonstrating in Tahrir square and called for Mubarak’s resignation. Sharaf’s name was then suggested for the premiership by the crowds in Tahrir square. Sharaf was subsequently appointed as the Prime Minister on March 3rd 2011, becoming the first post-revolution Prime Minister of Egypt. He is now directing the development of the Suez Canal/Sinai region.

Based on his first-hand personal experience, Dr. Sharaf will take us through his journey starting from Tahrir square through his premiership experience. He will address the challenges Egypt had to face and the opportunities that were opened. The effects of the Arab Spring on the Muslim World and the West will be emphasized. Dr. Sharaf will also outline the development of the Suez Canal region for its importance to Egypt and the rest of the World.
